Children of Blood and Bone Reflection 1
The theme of maternal lineage continues and the importance of family. Honestly, Zelie reminded me of Tia because she is very reactive and does not process the short-terms/ long-term consequences. The village being anchored and floating parallels the islands in Na Viro. It seems that those who do not possess magic are lighter in complexion because the Queen is always trying to lighten Amari’s skin because of the rumor. The concept of only certain people being blessed by the gods and having this deeper connection to the land around them, but they loose it if they use their gift to harm someone, parallels the concept of humanity. They may only keep their gift if they use it to enhance humanity and nature, but once its use for harm or corruption, the people lose their deep connection to nature. In a way this reminds me of the effects of colonialism and how Dani lost her humanity due to human vices. Its also interesting that there is this cycle of power and corruption. This connects to the theme in Na Viro of both the colonizer and colonized can be corrupted by human vices; the maji royals became greedy with power and then the non-maji royals became corrupt because of fear. Once again proving that time is circular-the past, present, and future are all connected and highlighting the importance of diverse stories to build the full picture (like a puzzle).
