Na Viro Reflection

Dani’s humanity rapidly decreases and it is clear that although the Academy had ill intentions, Dani took the agenda to the extremes. She did not have any genuine- familial reactions when it was  a possibility that Leilani was dead and she was willing to choke Tia to death if it meant getting the probe (240; 322-325). That is mind boggling to me because what level of selfishness, greed and hatred does a human being have to reach in order to view their family as an obstacle/ disposable? On the topic of the Academy, Leilani shocked me in the best way possible! (254-257)

I like how both sisters reject Dani’s views, but that they did it in opposite ways. Both had the same goal, but different ways of achieving it. Tia was more apparent and actively denouncing the Academy, while Leilani decided to be more active in preventing the Academy in causing further-overall- harm. Since Tia was only focused on saving Earth, she never considered that other planets could face the same fate as Earth, while Leilani  was focused on limiting the Academy’s overall destructive agenda.

Despite Tia mentioning that she could have helped the resistance if she would have known, I think it would have made matters worse. Growing up Tia held so much anger and resentment towards her parents (mainly Dani) and did not  control her reactions. Her emotions would often overpower her and it would cause her to react impulsively. A main example of this is Leilani  having to constantly pull Tia out of fights during their years training at the Academy. Meanwhile, Leilani knew when it was best to lead with the head or heart, which is why she was chosen for the resistance; Leilani can remain level-headed while Tia cannot.

I like the parallels Cole shows between the beginning of the story and the end. For example, Dani saw other planets (ex: Thrae)  as resources she could exploit, while Tia saw Thrae and contemplated how to adapt their ideas and structures to human society and Eath to save the planet (259;283). Another parallel is the connection between Tia and Leilani. The way they work as one to travel through the currents; it is a seamless collaboration. (293-296).

Lastly Turukawa’s humanity and her relationship with Tia (I don’t know how to feel about that). I find her sentient development interesting, she went from being regarded as cold and solely  serving the Academy to genuinely caring about Tia’s wellbeing and defying the Academy's agenda, which suggest some form of knowing what is right from wrong , rather than just facts. Additionally, Turukawa was in a previous relationship which suggest some form of interest and desire to connect with other beings (283; 288) I still do not know what to make of the fact that Turukawa chose to sacrifice her body to save everyone else (definitely demonstrating more humanity than Dani) and how Tia did not hesitate to jump after her (322-325). Either way, all of these topics connect to one concept: Human beings do not know how to maintain a balance. We love hard and destroy harder.
